Monoprinting

Monoprinting is the process of creating individual prints using printing plates in combination with water-based or oil-based inks or paint. A monoprint is a single, unique print, so each inking onto the Printing surface creates an individual  'one off' Monoprint. When I create my own Monoprints I work in a very painterly way so I firstly mix up different colours using oil based inks which I can thin using oil or white spirit. I then use these inks to paint directly onto my Monoprint plate using brushes. Once I have completed my image I place my Printing Paper on top of my painted Monoprint image and then run the Monoprint through the Printing Press.

Once my Monoprint has dried I also sometimes use soft chalks to draw onto the print adding or taking away colours, with the chalks blending very well with my Monoprints based on Still Life Collections combined with Natural Forms, and Landscape. My mages are painted onto clear perspex with brushes, rollers and cloths using oil based Etching Inks. The whole image is painted in one inking session, paper is then placed over my inked Monoprint image and the print is run through the Printing Press to produce the final Monoprint. Once my Monoprint is dry I often work into the surface of the print, adding further detail and colour using soft chalk pastels.
